Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Counselling or Psychotherapy?

Counselling or Psychotherapy is a collaborative process where you work with a therapist to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe, supportive environment. It helps you better understand yourself, manage emotions, and work through challenges.

At An Inclusive Mind, therapy is NOT about "fixing" you but providing you with tools and strategies that respect your unique Neurotype and emotional needs. For Neurodivergent individuals, therapy can be an opportunity to explore how your Neurodivergence shapes your life and to develop coping mechanisms that honour your individual strengths and experiences.

Please note that I do not do assessments, reports or diagnoses. For these, you must attend a Clinical Psychologist.

2. What does "a Neurotype", "Neurodivergent", "Neurodivergence" ,"Neurotypical" and "Neurodiverse" mean?

Language is personal to everyone and at An Inclusive Mind, I am mindful of respecting the preferences of the Autistic Community in the language I use. I understand these terms may be unfamiliar to some and below is a brief explanation of some of the words used on my website:

-
Neurotype – Every person has a unique way their brain processes, perceives, and engages with the world. This is their Neurotype—not something to be judged or ranked, but simply a natural part of who they are. No Neurotype is more “correct” than another; all are equally valid expressions of human diversity.
-
Neurodivergent – A term for individuals whose brains function in ways that differ from dominant societal expectations. This includes, but is not limited to, Autistic people, ADHD, OCD, Down Syndrome, Dyslexic people, and others with natural cognitive variations. Being Neurodivergent is NOT a flaw or something to be "overcome", "cured" or "fixed". It is a valuable way of experiencing the world, bringing unique strengths, perspectives, and ways of thinking.
-
Neurodivergence – The natural diversity in how human brains work. Neurodivergence is NOT a problem to be solved; it is an essential part of the world, just like biodiversity in nature. When society is designed to be accessible and affirming, Neurodivergent people thrive—bringing innovation, creativity, deep focus, empathy, and new ways of understanding the world.
-
Neurotypical – A term for individuals whose Neurotype aligns with dominant societal expectations and norms. Neurotypical people process and experience the world in ways that society is generally built to accommodate. However, Neurotypicality is not the “default” or the “correct” way to be—it is simply one of many valid ways of existing. Neurotypical and Neurodivergent people both contribute to the richness of human experience, and neither is more valuable than the other.
-
Neurodiverse - A word to describe all the Neurotype groups of humankind. It is inaccurate to call an individual Neurodiverse as an individual cannot be diverse!

A Neuro-Affirmative perspective, such as the one I embrace at An Inclusive Mind recognises all Neurotypes as inherently worthy and equal.

3. How can therapy at An Inclusive Mind help me?

Many clients come to me to explore possible Neurodivergent identity, having struggled on and off for years, feeling "different" but not being quite able to figure out why. Many report having been told they are too "over-sensitive", too "serious", too "fussy" or too "dramatic" and have had their feelings invalidated for most if not all of their lives. Many have experienced anxiety, depression, bullying and trauma as well as masking while trying to cope in a world built for Neurotypical standards and norms.

Similarly parents whose children may be Neurodivergent and going through the assessment process benefit from a compassionate and understanding, supportive environment where they can explore their feelings about their journey in a non-judgemental space and become equipped to view Neurodivergence through a Neuro-Affirmative lens.

Therapy is especially helpful for late discovered Neurodivergent individuals as they navigate through their discovery and embrace their authentic selves. This includes individuals who choose to self-identify as well as those who have completed a formal identification process.

4. What types of therapy do you offer?

I work with adults 18 years and older only.

Just as each client is unique, so too are the therapeutic approaches I draw upon when working with clients. The core of my Practice is based on a Person-Centred, Neurodiversity- Affirming approach, and I draw on my skills from my Counselling/ Psychotherapy and Coaching qualifications to tailor sessions to meet individual clients' needs and goals.

5. How do I know if therapy is for me?

If you’re supporting someone who is Neurodivergent, it is beneficial to attend therapy to gain support and self-care as well as a deeper understanding of Neurodivergence through a Neuro-Affirmative lens.

For Neurodivergent individuals, therapy is a valuable tool if you're finding social interactions challenging, experiencing anxiety or sensory overwhelm, or need guidance on emotional regulation. It’s also for those who simply want to understand themselves better and develop coping strategies that work for their unique Neurotype.

6. How long does each therapy session last and how often do I attend?

Therapy sessions last 55 minutes.

Following the Initial Full Consultation, clients usually attend on a weekly basis thereafter. Following six sessions we will undertake a collaborative review together to discuss how to proceed. I will also check in with clients to ensure that they are happy with how the process is going for them and how frequently they wish to attend going forward. I will review this again with clients every six weeks.

7. How much do you charge and do you offer a free consultation?

I offer an initial 15 minute free online consultation to ensure client comfort and to answer any questions about the service I provide.

Should a client wish to proceed, the first session is an Initial Full Consultation and the fee for this is €65. At the Initial Full Consultation I will discuss the client contract, limits to Confidentiality and gather information regarding a client's expectations and goals for therapy.

Subsequent sessions are charged at €80 each.

8. Can I claim back from my private health insurance provider?

Receipts are issued after each session which may be used to claim back from your private health insurance provider. As each provider has different plans and policies, I advise clients to check with their own provider for clarity regarding the amount that can be reclaimed.
